Community Post: An Interview with Agustin

In honor of the NYC Marathon, Brooks is releasing a limited edition version of the Adrenaline GTS 16, inspired by the lights of the New York City Skyline.  Agustin Fiorito, a long time Training Programs participant and mentor, is running the New York City Marathon for the first time on November 1st.   Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Agustin moved to the US in 2000 to attend business school at Indiana University.  After school, Agustin found his way to Chapel Hill where he has stayed to raise his family.

Why the New York City Marathon?  In 2008, I happened to be in New York during the race and got the chance to go spectate in Central Park. After I got serious into running it crossed my mind that it would be a great race to do. This year it all finally came together and I’ll be running the streets of NYC with my great friend and training partner, Hernan. It is a race with a great history, great crowds, and amazing fan support.  I am looking forward to enjoying the entire weekend, seeing the city like never before, and soaking up the whole experience.

What are you doing to prepare for this race?  I am following a 16 week training program similar to the ones I have done for other marathons.  This time I am paying much more attention to the mid-week runs as well as to the track speed workouts. Following this strict training plan would not be possible without the support of my family.

How long have you been running and what inspires you to run?  I started running in October 2010 when my wife and I joined the 5K No Boundaries Program at Fleet Feet.  My goal at the time was to complete my first triathlon.  Since then, I’d completed many races and both my son and daughter have also gotten serious about running.  In March of 2011 I dedicated my first half marathon to my wife who at the time had just been diagnosed with cancer.  During that race I thought about her and what she was going through. Since then, she has been my inspiration to keeping running.

What is the best thing about running?  It is a great way to meet new people and do something good for you.  Running is now a part of me, a part of who I am, and a part of our family’s lifestyle.  I have met many great friends and had many amazing experiences thanks to running.

What is the worst part of running? I would say that the worst part about running is having discovered it. Once you’ve started running it’s hard to give it up!
